  1. Sleep Loss linked to Temperature Levels - 2011-02-24 01:59:47-05
Sleep habits have been linked to obesity but now it looks like there is a new factor that will be thrown into it. This has to do with the level of temperature a person has around him, something that could be a vital cog with regards to sleep loss. The study was made by researchers over the Simona Bo at the University of Turin in Italy. Compared to people who kept their homes no warmer than 20 C (68 F) in the fall and winter, those who liked a toastier home were twice as likely to become obese. It seems that getting better sleep and staying healthy just got more complicated. The bright side though is that you may end up saving on your electric bill if you turn down the thermostat. 4. Warning: Avoid Sleeping with your Dogs - 2011-02-26 13:43:39-05
We all know how people are very much attached to their dogs, taking them anywhere and others who sleep with them. Then again with consideration to your health, you may want to reconsider sleeping with your pooch once you hear this. Apparently Plague, a Category A bioterrorism agent may be inherited for such a practice. This developed after two cases in the United States last year were traced to people who slept with dogs. They suffered from severe illness which can be passed on to another person. Also, it triggers what planners bluntly term "public panic and social disruption" The culprit? It seems that fleas are to blame here. Though some people make it a habit to bathe their dog, fleas can act as carriers that include Y.pestis. These are normally contracted from rodents, creatures that your mutt are surely to be exposed too. The solution? Either buy your dog a flea collar, make sure he is properly bathed and disinfected or better yet, avoid sleeping with them altogether. Causes of Cervical Cancer

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 05:35 PM PST

4047056075 55a9504aef m Causes of Cervical Cancer

Cancer treatment is a very controversial subject, as soon as one ventures outside the sphere of mainstream medical authority into the field of alternative medicine. There are very good reasons for this heated controversy. In its simplest terms, the conflict is between freedom of information and self interest (profit).

Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer and the main cause of cancer deaths in women after breast cancer. The main cause of the disease is the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV), meaning that this is a preventable form of cancer.

Cervical cancer has been established as the second most common cancer that usually occurs in women and is second to breast cancer. Every year, there is an estimate of over 20,000 women in the world experiences some early symptoms. This type of cancer is malignant neoplasm of the cervix uteri or the cervical area. It may be present with vaginal bleeding but the symptoms may not be visible until the cancer is diagnosed in its advanced stages.

Initially I was taken aback by the revelation that a virus caused cervical cancer but then I began to wonder what it was that led the medical profession to almost unanimously adopt this idea when all other cancers clearly showed that chemicals (or radiation) was responsible. As I looked into this more deeply, I came across a most perplexing riddle. You see, what set doctors along a path in search of a viral cause of the disease was triggered by an obscure report in a regional medical journal in Venice.

Cervical cancer is a malignant cancer tissue that attack cervix (organ connecting the uterus and vagina). There are some types of this cancer. The most common types, the SCC (squalors cell carcinoma), a major cause of cervical cancer with the percentage of 80-85 percent. HPV infection is a “trigger” major in the development of this cancer.

Cervical cancer is a malignant cancer of the cervix. Cervical cancer is cancer that starts in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus (womb) that opens at the top. The upper part, or body, of the uterus, is where a fetus grows. The cervix connects the body of the uterus to the (birth canal). The part of the cervix closest to the body of the uterus is called the endocervix.

This is the most important of all the risk factors associated to the cancer of the cervix. Doctors believe that before a woman can develop cervical cancer, she must have been infected by HPV. Some types of this HPV are classified as “high risk” because they are the main causes of cervical cancer.

The cervix is at the bottom of the uterus, the place where a baby grows during pregnancy. Cervical cancer is caused by some type of virus called human papillomaviruses (HPV). The virus spreads through sexual contact. Most of the female body able to fight HPV infection. But sometimes the virus causes cancer. You are at higher risk if you smoke, have many children, the Pill for a long time, or HIV infection.

There are two main types of cervical cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common form, occurring in about 80 to 90 percent of all cases. It develops in the thin, flat cells, called squamous cells, that cover the surface of the endocervix, the portion of the cervix closest to the uterus. Adenocarcinoma is more common in younger women and forms in the gland cells within the endocervix.

The acronym HPV stands for Human papillomaviruses. HPV are a group of viruses of which there are over 100 different types. They can produce benign tumors, known as Papillomas or warts, which tend to grow in areas such as the hands, feet, throat or genital areas. The causes of the warts vary.

The Journal of the American Medical Association presents follow up information on the risks of the vaccine against HPV(1). There is also a special communication(2) that discusses concerns about the way this vaccine was presented to the public by the manufacturer and professional medical associations.

Kidney Cancer Survival Rate Data

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 04:23 PM PST

2971652833 86602694e3 m Kidney Cancer Survival Rate Data

To calculate the kidney cancer survival rate, you must take several different factors into consideration. Generally speaking, these factors are related to the patient who has been diagnosed with kidney cancer, and the kidney cancer stage..

In gathering their survival rate statistics, researchers take the type of cancer, stage, grade and location into consideration. Factors regarding the patient that must be considered include the individual’s age, general health, and ability to undergo necessary treatment.

Using data reflecting these factors in recent decades, medical researchers have been able to generate some statistics for kidney cancer survival rates. Just one type of kidney cancer is shown below, but it is far more common than any other variety. It is known as renal cell carcinoma.

When the kidney cancer survival rate is calculated, it’s most often expressed as a percentage. That is, it’s statistically normal for a certain percent of patients who have the same type of cancer at approximately the same stage to still be alive after a defined period of time.

It should be said that the kidney cancer survival rate is a generalization based on a huge number of cases that occurred over a long time. There’s no way to predict what will happen in any individual case.

As is the case with most other diseases, the kidney cancer survival rate is measured in five year periods. In other words, a certain percentage of patients found to have kidney cancer will survive for a minimum of five years after their diagnosis.

There are a variety of categories that can be listed for kidney cancer survival rates.. The statistics in this article measure the survival rate of kidney cancer patients compared with the general population. This data comes from a study done between 1995 and 2001.

During this interval, the overall survival rate for kidney cancer patients was 64.6 percent.

The numbers were broken down further by race and gender. These were

* 64.7 percent of Caucasian males survived for at least 5 years

* The statistic was almost exactly the same for Caucasian women at 64.5 percent.

* The number for African American Men was slightly lower: 61.8 percent

* African American women had the highest survival rate, coming in at just under 66 percent

The survival rate also depends on the stage the cancer has reached by the time it’s diagnosed. A higher stage assignment means the cancer has spread more and will therefore be more difficult to treat.

Approximately 53 percent of kidney cancer cases are found before cancer cells have spread beyond the kidneys.

1 case in 5 or twenty percent is diagnosed after cancer cells have spread beyond the kidneys to nearby lymph nodes, tissues or organs.

Slightly more than one in five cases – 22 percent – are diagnosed when cancer cells have reached distant tissues or organs.

Stages were unclear in the rest of the kidney cancer cases that were included in the study.

You won’t be surprised to learn that the sooner the cancer was diagnosed, the longer the patient was likely to survive.

* 9 out of 10 patients who were diagnosed when cancer was confined to the kidneys survived at least five years.

* The survival rate dropped to 60 percent for those whose cancer had spread to regions near the kidneys.

* The survival rate was only 9.7 percent when cancer had spread to distant organs and tissues elsewhere in the body.

* Stage information was unclear or undiagnosed for the remaining percentage of patients.

The highest percentage of kidney cancer occurs in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, along with Northern Europe. Kidney cancer occurs least often in China, Thailand and the Philippines. Of all cancer cases diagnosed in the United States, 1 in every 33 is kidney cancer.

Two smokers develop kidney cancer for every non-smoker who gets the disease. The risk for renal pelvis cancer is even greater for smokers at 4 to 1.

Prostate Cancer Treatment – How to Detect Early Signs

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 03:19 PM PST

4442818034 0e61e8bd91 m Prostate Cancer Treatment How to Detect Early Signs

Prostate cancer is the disease which is found more in men than women. It can be cured if it is found in the initial stage, so no need to get tensed you can come out of it without any harm.

This is a disease in which cancer develops in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. Cancer cells may spread from the prostate cancer to other parts of the body, especially the bones and lymph nodes.

This cancer develops most frequently in men over fifty. However, many men who develop prostate cancer never have symptoms, undergo no therapy, and eventually die of other causes.

When cells in the prostate grow abnormally, they form multiple small cancerous tumors. If the cancer is left untreated, it will at some point metastasize and begin to spread to other organs in the body via the bloodstream and lymphatic system.

Prostate Cancer: Who’s at Risk
1.Age: Prostrate cancer is got to the men who are at the age above 50.
2.Family history: A man is at higher risk if the father or brother is suffering from this disease.
3.Race: This disease is more in African American men than in other men.
4.Diet and dietary factors: The diet in the animal fat may create for higher risk for prostrate cancer and the diet in the vegetables and fruits may decrease the risk for
this type of cancer.

What causes this typ of cancer.
While nobody knows what causes this cancer, there are some recognised risk factors:

· Risk increases over the age of 50 years. When the man starts growing older he gets attacked with this.  Prostate cancer is rare in younger men.

· If your father or brother had prostate cancer, then can get at it is at high risk increases. If they had it at a young age, your risk is even higher.

·  High fat, lots of red meat. Countries with low fat and low meat diets
have low levels of prostate cancer.
· Being overweight is a major risk factor for all cancers.

Recognising symptoms

    * A need to urinate frequently, especially at night;
    * Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine;
    * Inability to urinate;
    * Weak or interrupted flow of urine;
    * Painful or burning urination;
    * Difficulty in having an erection;
    * Painful ejaculation;
    * Blood in urine or semen; or
* Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs.

Treatment of prostate cancer

Treatment generally depends on several different factors present in each case of the disease.  The type of prostate cancer, the size of the cancer, its location, as well the health condition of the patient all play a part in how prostate cancer will be treated.

Often, prostate cancer is a slow progressing disease although this is not always the case,  but this is no excuse to procrastinate. Cure rates are very high if treatment begins while the cancer is in its early stages, but drop steeply once the cancer metastasizes. Get tested today – no pain, much gain!

Obviously, the sooner this cancer is found and diagnosed, the better the chance of recovery. Success in prostate cancer treatment will depend on a number of factors including the progression of the disease upon discovery, where the cancer is located, the age and health of the patient, and how it reacts to treatment.

Treatments other than conventional western medicine are usually considered “alternative therapies.” They usually are not backed by scientific data but by years of use. Some alternative therapies date back thousands of years. These medicines do not have any harm at all they are natural treatments.

Cancer Markers

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 12:25 PM PST

2919603393 3aed4f7e68 m Cancer Markers

There, I said it – the big C word. No one wants to hear it. You could possess a spouse and children member who has it, be a survivor yourself, or know someone who has died from it.

Since I have PBC (major biliary cirrhosis) I am concerned about liver cancer. I have blood tests just about every so several months to keep an eye on my liver enzyme levels. There’s a high incidence of liver cancer resulting from individuals who have had liver cirrhosis.

You may well have been curious how doctors can tell what stage of cancer a person has.

Alpha-fetoprotein or AFP is a type of tumor marker which is utilized to diagnose cancer. These markers are employed to determine which stage of cancer a patient has. Tumor markers are substances (mostly proteins) that happen to be created by the system or by the tumor itself in response to cancer.

A high reading of specific proteins in an urine or blood sample may possibly indicate an additional aggressive cancer. Commonly, the higher the resulting number of your marker, the higher the stage of cancer.

Where symptoms suggest cancer in a patient, urine and blood samples are taken and submitted to a laboratory to become tested for cancer tumor marker levels.

The results assist the physician in determining if a patient has cancer. They can also help diagnose the type of cancer the patient has.

Cancer markers also are practical in determining the prognosis for your patient. They’re also utilised to check to see if cancer has returned after remission.

A biopsy is taken once a diagnosis of cancer has been made, and again tumor markers can help to determine the amount of cancer that’s present inside the patient’s physique.

Advanced cancer is indicated by higher tumor marker levels as well as the prognosis is less good.

With the help of cancer markers, a doctor can then determine the best treatment for your patient.

Kinds of Cancer Markers

Some from the most common cancer markers (AFP) are employed for diagnosing the following cancers:

Cancer research is ongoing in hopes to discover tumor markers for other varieties of cancers.

Not just one tumor marker is applied for all cancers, and not all cancers have tumor markers that work specifically for their diagnosis and treatment.

Once cancer treatment has been started by a patient, they will need to have further testing with tumor markers to see if their particular treatment is working.

If the tumor marker level declines, it generally is definitely an indication that the current treatment is working.

If the level increases or stays the same, the physician may well try a different form of treatment.

It’s important that a sure amount of time has passed between cancer marker testing to give the treatment a chance to work around the tumor.

Drawbacks of Cancer Markers

You will find only a few cancer markers that happen to be able to find cancer while in the early stages. In fact, there are actually specified noncancerous ailments which can contribute to a high tumor marker level.

On occasion, cancer marker levels could not be elevated in a person who really has cancer. It can be important that all tests are taken into consideration, which includes a complete physical examination, history in the patient, other laboratory tests and scans.

Another drawback of testing with markers is that often you get a false favourable. There are actually a few factors that might contribute to an inaccurate lab test. Specified medications can alter the results of blood and urine tests, which include Vitamin C, Naproxen Sodium or Tylenol. Some antibiotics can also affect the tests.

False positives rates for cancer marker tests are typically 5 per cent. For other false positives or false negatives and their causes go to this link.

Personally, I have lost a boss to cancer from smoking. It was not lung, but nose cancer. He was way too young to die, and was a very kind man. He was a chain smoker.

I am glad that research continues on these varieties of markers to help in detecting cancer cells early on so a person has a better chance of surviving.

If you have peculiar symptoms, breast changes, weight loss, uncommon bleeding, unexplained fatigue, gnawing pain, indigestion, changes in lymph nodes, depression, or persistent cough or sore that will not heal, go to see your doctor. It’s better to become tested early rather than wait until it can be too late to deal with it.

Paying Attention to Cancer Symptoms

Posted: 27 Feb 2011 03:48 PM PST

4914450794 b0775316e5 m Paying Attention to Cancer Symptoms

Cancer, in its many different forms and types is a disease most of us fear. The different types of treatments are not easy to go through, physically and mentally and their success rates aren’t always high. Among factors that can affect the treatment’s odds and chances to beat the disease, is the extremely important factor of early detection.

No matter what cancer type it is, early detection always increases the odds to beat the disease and clear one’s body from the cancerous cells or remove the tumor. Early detection is sometimes critical while it often leads to the treatments beginning in the early stages of the cancer, when the chances that the cancer has spread are still low and that the tumor hasn’t had a lot of time to grow. If the cancer hasn’t spread, treatment can be targeted in a better way with any kind of treatment available (surgery, chemotherapy or radiation to name a few) and thus raise the chances to expel the cancer from the body.

To detect a cancer tumor in or on our body in its early stages, we must be alert to possible cancer symptoms and basically be attentive to our body. We mustn’t ignore abnormalities in our body and dismiss them as “nothing”, as me must look into what’s wrong and make sure it is “nothing”.

There are many different cancer symptoms, as there are many different types of cancer. But there are a few symptoms that are universal and most cancers share.

One major symptom is of course an abnormal growth or lump that appears anywhere on your body. If the specific part of the body is not supposed to suddenly grow, this may indicate there is a problem. Woman can feel lumps in their breasts that may indicate there is breast cancer; thyroid cancer manifests as a lump under the skin which you can see and feel in the neck area, lymphoma will make your lymph nodes larger than they normally are. In Melanoma, the cancer will appear on your skin as a lump, a brown spot or a mole suddenly changing.

Another very frequent cancer symptom is abnormal bleeding. Different types of cancer manifests in unexpected bleeding. Bladder, kidney and prostate cancer can cause blood to appear in the urine, colorectal cancer causes blood to appear in the stool and endometrial and cervical cancer can cause abnormal vaginal bleeding, both during menstrual periods and between them. Lung cancer can cause one to cough up blood or for blood to appear in the sputum and leukemia can cause excessively bleeding. Once one is experiencing unusual bleeding, they should have it checked out.

Different types of cancer also cause the universal symptoms of sudden weight loss or weakness and fatigue. Cancer can cause an unplanned drop in your weight for no apparent reason, as it can be accompanied by a loss of appetite, but not necessarily. Most cancers also can cause unexplained weakness and tiredness and one will not understand why.

In addition to general cancer symptoms as mentioned, there is always the subjective symptom of sudden unexplained pain in a certain area of the body. One may experience pain in the pelvis area from prostate, cervical and endometrial cancer. Bladder cancer can cause pain during urination, colorectal will cause pain in the stomach as will pancreatic cancer, lung cancer can cause chest pain, thyroid Cancer can cause pain in the neck and throat and your leukemia may cause bone and joint pain.

It is important to understand that any of these cancer symptoms mentioned above do not mean that anyone experiencing them necessarily has cancer. These are also symptoms that can be caused by different and other conditions then a cancerous tumor. However, if one of these does appear, it is important not to neglect it and have a doctor examine the problem.

General Information about Breast Cancer and Pregnancy

Posted: 27 Feb 2011 02:01 PM PST

3592030553 1e4b4e2bd1 m General Information about Breast Cancer and Pregnancy

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast.

The breast is made up of lobes and ducts. Each breast has 15 to 20 sections called lobes, which have many smaller sections called lobules. The lobes and lobules are connected by thin tubes called ducts.

Each breast also contains blood vessels and lymph vessels. The lymph vessels carry an almost colorless fluid called lymph. The lymph vessels lead to small, bean-shaped organs called lymph nodes that help the body fight infection and disease. Lymph nodes are found throughout the body. Clusters of lymph nodes are found near the breast in the axilla (under the arm), above the collarbone, and in the chest.

Breast cancer is sometimes detected (found) in women who are pregnant or have just given birth.

In women who are pregnant or who have just given birth, breast cancer occurs most often between the ages of 32 and 38. Breast cancer occurs about once in every 3,000 pregnancies.

It may be difficult to detect (find) breast cancer early in pregnant or nursing women, whose breasts are often tender and swollen.

Women who are pregnant, nursing, or have just given birth usually have tender, swollen breasts. This can make small lumps difficult to detect and may lead to delays in diagnosing breast cancer. Because of these delays, cancers are often found at a later stage in these women.

Breast examination should be part of prenatal and postnatal care.

To detect breast cancer, pregnant and nursing women should examine their breasts themselves. Women should also receive clinical breast examinations during their routine prenatal and postnatal examinations.

Tests that examine the breasts are used to detect (find) and diagnose breast cancer.

If an abnormality is found, one or all of the following tests may be used:

Ultrasound exam: A procedure in which high-energy sound waves (ultrasound) are bounced off internal tissues or organs and make echoes. The echoes form a picture of body tissues called a sonogram.
Mammogram: An x-ray of the breast. A mammogram can be performed with little risk to the fetus. Mammograms in pregnant women may appear negative even though cancer is present.

Biopsy: The removal of cells or tissues by a pathologist so they can be viewed under a microscope to check for signs of cancer.
Certain factors affect prognosis (chance of recovery) and treatment options.

The prognosis (chance of recovery) and treatment options depend on the following:

The stage of the cancer (whether it is in the breast only or has spread to other places in the body).
The size of the tumor.
The type of breast cancer.
The age of the fetus.
Whether there are symptoms.
The patient’s general health.
Stages of Breast Cancer
After breast cancer has been diagnosed, tests are done to find out if cancer cells have spread within the breast or to other parts of the body.

The process used to find out if the cancer has spread within the breast or to other parts of the body is called staging. The information gathered from the staging process determines the stage of the disease. It is important to know the stage in order to plan treatment. (Refer to the PDQ summary on Breast Cancer Treatment for more information on the stages used for breast cancer.)

Methods used to stage breast cancer can be changed to make them safer for the fetus.

Standard methods for giving imaging scans can be adjusted so that the fetus is exposed to less radiation. Tests to measure the level of hormones in the blood may also be used in the staging process.

Treatment Option Overview
There are different types of treatment for patients with breast cancer.

Different types of treatment are available for patients with breast cancer. Some treatments are standard (the currently used treatment), and some are being tested in clinical trials. Before starting treatment, patients may want to think about taking part in a clinical trial. A treatment clinical trial is a research study meant to help improve current treatments or obtain information on new treatments for patients with cancer. When clinical trials show that a new treatment is better than the standard treatment, the new treatment may become the standard treatment.

Clinical trials are taking place in many parts of the country. Information about ongoing clinical trials is available from the NCI Web site. Choosing the most appropriate cancer treatment is a decision that ideally involves the patient, family, and health care team.

Treatment options for pregnant women depend on the stage of the disease and the age of the fetus.
Three types of standard treatment are used:

Most pregnant women with breast cancer have surgery to remove the breast. Some of the lymph nodes under the arm are usually taken out and looked at under a microscope to see if they contain cancer cells.

Types of surgery to remove the breast include:

Simple mastectomy: A surgical procedure to remove the whole breast that contains cancer. Some of the lymph nodes under the arm may also be removed for biopsy. This procedure is also called a total mastectomy.

Modified radical mastectomy: A surgical procedure to remove the whole breast that has cancer, many of the lymph nodes under the arm, the lining over the chest muscles, and sometimes, part of the chest wall muscles.

Breast-conserving surgery, an operation to remove the cancer but not the breast itself, includes the following:

Lumpectomy: A surgical procedure to remove a tumor (lump) and a small amount of normal tissue around it. Most doctors also take out some of the lymph nodes under the arm.
Partial mastectomy: A surgical procedure to remove the part of the breast that contains cancer and some normal tissue around it. Some of the lymph nodes under the arm may also be removed for biopsy. This procedure is also called a segmental mastectomy.

Even if the doctor removes all of the cancer that can be seen at the time of surgery, the patient may be given radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy after surgery to try to kill any cancer cells that may be left. Treatment given after surgery to increase the chances of a cure is called adjuvant therapy.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment that uses high-energy x-rays or other types of radiation to kill cancer cells. There are two types of radiation therapy. External radiation therapy uses a machine outside the body to send radiation toward the cancer. Internal radiation therapy uses a radioactive substance sealed in needles, seeds, wires, or catheters that are placed directly into or near the cancer. The way the radiation therapy is given depends on the type and stage of the cancer being treated.

Radiation therapy should not be given to pregnant women with early stage (stage I or II) breast cancer because it can harm the fetus. For women with late stage (stage III or IV) breast cancer, it should not be given during the first 3 months of pregnancy.

Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping the cells from dividing. When chemotherapy is taken by mouth or injected into a vein or muscle, the drugs enter the bloodstream and can reach cancer cells throughout the body (systemic chemotherapy). When chemotherapy is placed directly into the spinal column, an organ, or a body cavity such as the abdomen, the drugs mainly affect cancer cells in those areas (regional chemotherapy). The way the chemotherapy is given depends on the type and stage of the cancer being treated.

Chemotherapy should not be given during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Chemotherapy given after this time does not usually harm the fetus but may cause early labor and low birth weight.

New types of treatment are being tested in clinical trials. These include the following:
Hormone therapy

Hormone therapy is a cancer treatment that removes hormones or blocks their action and stops cancer cells from growing. Hormones are substances produced by glands in the body and circulated in the bloodstream. Some hormones can cause certain cancers to grow. If tests show that the cancer cells have places where hormones can attach (receptors), drugs, surgery, or radiation therapy are used to reduce the production of hormones or block them from working.

The effectiveness of hormone therapy, alone or combined with chemotherapy, in treating breast cancer in pregnant women is not yet known.

This summary section refers to specific treatments under study in clinical trials, but it may not mention every new treatment being studied. Information about ongoing clinical trials is available from the NCI Web site.

Ending the pregnancy does not seem to improve the mother’s chance of survival and is not usually a treatment option.

If the cancer must be treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which may harm the fetus, ending the pregnancy is sometimes considered. This decision may depend on the stage of cancer, the age of the fetus, and the mother’s chance of survival.

4047056075 55a9504aef m Causes ,effects symptoms and treatments of head and neck cancer

Head & Neck Cancer: Head and neck cancer occurs due to the spreading of cancer cells in the head and neck area. Generally, the cells grow and divide into multiple cells and they die when they grow old, and new cells take their place. But due to some causes these basic life cycle of the cells gets damage and began to grow rapidly without any controlling limit. These cells form a huge mass of tissue which is called as tumor.

Tumors are of two types they are:
Benign tumor: These tumors are not life threatening tumors. This cancer can be removed easily by surgery process. They don't reoccur. These tumors grow in single site. They do not spread and invade other tissues around them. The benign tumor cells doesn't contain metastatic characteristics( spreading nature to other parts of the body)
Malignant tumor: These tumors are cancerous tumors. They spread to other parts of the body. These tumors can be removed but sometimes they grow back. Malignant tumors invade nearby tissues and organs. These tumors contain metastatic characters.
When the cancer cells spreads to the other parts will form a new tumor which has the same characteristic features of the primary tumor. For example, if the head and neck cancer cells spread to the lungs, the cancer cells in the lungs are actually belonging to the head and neck cancer cells. Then this cancer disease is called as metastatic head and neck cancer.

Head and cancer affects the following types:

Oral cavity: Oral cavity contains many parts like lips, tongue, tonsils, lining of the cheeks, salivary glands, hard palate (roof of the mouth), soft palate (back of the mouth), and floor of the mouth, gums and teeth.

Salivary glands: These glands are useful in producing the fluid (saliva) in the throat moist and mouth. These glands are located in the jawbone and in the floor of the month.

Paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity: The Paranasal sinuses consist of small hollow spaces in the head bones surrounding the nose and the nasal cavity is located in the hollow space inside the nose.

Larynx: It is also called as voice box. It is located just below the neck. Larynx contains vocal chord. There is small tissue called epiglottis in the larynx which helps in preventing the entry of food from entering the air passage.

Lymph nodes in the upper part of neck: Squamous cancer cells are present in the lower part of the neck. These cancer cells contain metastatic characteristics.

Pharynx: it is a hollow tube which is located behind the nose and leads to esophagus. Pharynx consists of three parts.

Hypopharynx: It is the lower part of the pharynx. Neasophayrnx: It is located in the upper part of pharynx. Oropharynx: Oropharynx is the middle part of the pharynx. It is the    base part of the tonsils and tongue.

Causes of head and neck cancers: The main causes for breast cancer are not identified but the risk factors for the breast cancer are identified and here is the list.

Risk factors for breast cancer:

These are the two main risk factors for causing head and neck cancers.

Chewing of tobacco: Tobacco chewing increases the risk factor for causing head and neck cancers. This activity has more adverse effects. Tobacco plays vital role for many cancer related disease. Tobacco smoking also leads to head and neck cancers. In which 87 percent of the cases are related to death cases due to its effect. Head and neck is the leading cancer in both men and women. Smoking also causes pancreatic, stomach, kidney, colon and leukemia cancer.

Alcohol: Taking of alcohols will reduce the performance of body immune system which causes the chances of many cancer diseases.

Other risk factors for head and neck cancers:

Oral cavity: Oral cavity contains many parts like lips, tongue, tonsils, lining of the cheeks, salivary glands, hard palate (roof of the mouth), soft palate (back of the mouth), and floor of the mouth, gums and teeth .due to the exposure to severe sun blistering of this oral cavity the risk factors increases.

Salivary glands: Severe exposure to harmful radiations can increase the risk for head and neck cancers

Paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity: severe exposure of this Paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity to industrial effects can increase the cancer effects.

Larynx: Due to exposure of larynx part to air borne particles will increase the risk factors.

Pharynx: Due to HPV infection of this part there is a chance for increase in risk factors.

Types of head and neck cancers: Hypopharyngeal Cancer, Laryngeal Cancer, Lip and Oral Cavity Cancer, Nasopharyngeal Cancer, Oropharyngeal Cancer, Paranasal Sinus and Nasal, Cavity Cancer and Salivary Gland Cancer are the following head and neck cancers.

Symptoms of head and neck cancer:

• Sore throat stays for longer time.
• Hoarseness
• Occurrence of Lump or sore that doesn't heal.
• Pain during swallowing
• Pain in throat
• Ear pain
• Trouble speaking
• Trouble breathing
• Chin swelling
• Pain in the neck
• Paralysis of face muscles.
• Loss of hearing
• headaches

Treatment procedure for head and neck cancers: The treatment procedure of head and neck cancers include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Surgery: Surgery is the main therapy for the curing of head and neck cancer in the early stage. This surgery process is carried by identifying the staging of the head and neck cancer. Surgery is carried to remove the tumor part in the mouth and neck area. During the surgery process the damaged lymph nodes and nearby tissues in the neck are also removed. During some cases, the major portion of other infected organs will be removed for avoiding the spreading of the disease throughout the body. Most of the time, patients will be given radiation therapy along with surgery treatment for complete removal of the tumor.

Radiation therapy: This treatment is based on the extent of the disease. Radiotherapy is a process of removing cancer cells by using high intensity x-rays. These high energy x-rays are aimed at the affected part to destroy the cancer cells.

There are two types of radiotherapy treatments they are.

External radiations: External radiation process is carried out from outside the body. The powerful x-ray beams are aimed at the effected area from outside the body and destroys the cancer causing cells permanently

Internal radiations: X-ray beams are passed into the body by making some small incisions in the head and neck area. This treatment gives better results than the external radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is one of the treatments useful in killing head and neck cancer causing cells by the usage of drugs. This treatment process is carried by either pills or through intravascular injections. The anti-cancer drug enters into the bloodstream and travels towards the damaged tissues and destroys the cancer cells.
Chemotherapeutic drugs attack the head and neck cancer cells by stopping their unusual growth. The nature of this head and neck cancer cells were brought to the normal condition by controlling the divisibility of the cells.
The chemotherapy drugs are given in the following form:

In tablet or pill form(head and neck) By taking injection(Intravenous or intramuscular) Injection taking in the (Intrathecal)

This cancer chemotherapy drug can be given at either clinic or at home. The usage of this drug can be daily, weekly or monthly depending on the stage of the cancer and body immune system. Chemotherapy treatment is given by considering the following basis like age, gender, drug toxicity and body weight. The dosage and usability should be carried under proper supervision.

Head and neck cancer occurs due to unusual growth of cancer cells in the head and neck region. This cancer is referred as metastatic cancer for its effects and causes. This cancer can be cured only in the early stage of its occurrence. This cancer has many risk factors.

2958003906 433a4ecc89 m Common Cancer Types and Risks

Cancer affects nearly each and every part of our body. There exist over a hundred different types of cancers. Cells in our body normally grow, divide, and produce more cells to perform specials tasks. When these normal healthy cells grow old or get damaged they die and are replaced by new cells to perform the same duties. But when they react to free radicals the normal cells get imbalanced and eventually an overgrowth of abnormal cells begins which compete with the normal cells and cause cancer. The names of many types of cancers are often associated with the organs it affects. Lung cancer is so called because the cancer is located in the lungs. Cancer is more frequently found in some parts of the body than others due to varied reasons not yet clear to science. Information on cancer can be obtained from various Health Information Centers and help one in detecting the initial signs of the disease.

Researchers and scientists have classified common types of cancer into five broad categories: (1) Central Nervous System Cancers – The brain and the tissues of the spinal cord are primarily affected. (2) Carcinoma – related cancers originate in the skin, and also in tissues that cover organs residing inside the body. The other parts affected by this type of cancer are the stomach, liver, breast, prostate, and the colon. (3) Leukemia – begins in the bone marrow (and other tissues where blood is formed), causing formation of abnormal blood cells that enter the blood stream. (4) Sarcoma – a cancer that starts from connective or supportive tissue cells. Examples include blood vessel, muscle, fat, bone and cartilage. (5) Myeloma and Lymphoma – develop in the cells located in the immune system.

Besides these common types of cancers, it is a fact that cancer can be caused due to infections. Cancer causing viruses such as human papillomavirus are known to cause cervical cancer.

The best way one can fight cancer is to stop it before it starts developing. Risk factors associated with cancer are known to aid cancer development. Studies have shown that avoiding cancer risk factors can help one in living a cancer free life. The list of risk factors is vast and varied including age, gene inheritance, hormones, obesity, specific viruses and bacteria, unhealthy eating habits, alcohol, artificial substances, sunlight, chemicals, radiation. One should not be surprised to see age among the list of common cancer risk factors. Aging is a natural process no one can avoid but leading a healthy lifestyle helps avoid cancer. Statistics show that majority of cancer patients comprise of senior citizens and they suffer mainly from common types of cancers. Those affected, led unhealthy lifestyles. Those with eating habits that are unhealthy, are obese, and are bereft of physical exercise are, as a result, not only prone to cancer but other ailments too such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cholesterol, cold and flu to name but a few.

A healthy lifestyle is also promoted in all forms of natural cancer treatments which are usually free of side effects. Similarly, lung cancer is caused by the carcinogen substances in tobacco. Smokers can quit this habit as they are at a risk of developing lung cancer. Presence of certain chemicals and substances also comprise cancer risk factors including cadmium, benzene, nickel, and asbestos found at various workplaces. Employees exposed to such chemicals and substances in hazardous environments are at a greater risk of developing cancer. Ozone therapy is a safer option among other natural cancer treatments. It works by killing off cancer cells which are anaerobic (thrive in absence of oxygen) in nature, and cannot survive in the presence of pure oxygen. Anti cancer diets are beneficial in prevention of cancer. Even those suffering from cancer can make use of anti cancer diet to improve their health and hopefully stop further spread of the disease. Natural cancer treatments are not a substitute but should be combined with traditional treatments to improve chances of controlling and preventing cancer. All in all – joining support groups, talking to family and friends, social interaction, along with appropriate exercise can together play a vital role in alleviation, prevention, and treatment of this dreadful disease.

Cancer Surgery

Cancer Surgery: Physically removing cancer

The prospect of cancer surgery may make you feel anxious. Put your mind at ease by learning more about cancer surgery and how and why it’s used.

Cancer surgery

An operation to repair or remove part of your body to diagnose or treat cancer — remains the foundation of cancer treatment. Your doctor may use cancer surgery to achieve any number of goals, from diagnosing your cancer to treating it to relieving the symptoms it causes. Cancer surgery may be your only treatment, or it may be supplemented with other treatments, such as radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and biological therapy.

How is cancer surgery used in treatment ?

Cancer prevention : – If there's reason to believe that you’ll develop cancer in certain tissues or organs, your doctor may recommend removing those tissues or organs before cancer develops.

Diagnosis : – Your doctor may use a form of cancer surgery to remove (biopsy) all or part of a tumor — allowing the tumor to be studied under a microscope — to determine whether the growth is cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign).

Staging : – Cancer surgery helps your doctor define how advanced your cancer is, called its stage. Surgery allows your doctor to evaluate the size of your tumor and determine whether it’s traveled to your lymph nodes.

Primary treatment : – For many tumors, cancer surgery is the best chance for a cure, especially if the cancer is localized and hasn’t spread. If there's evidence that your cancer hasn’t spread

Debulking : – When it’s not possible to remove all of a cancerous tumor — for example, because doing so may severely harm an organ — your doctor may remove as much as possible (debulking) in order to make chemotherapy or radiation more effective.

Relieving symptoms or side effects : – Sometimes surgery is used to improve your quality of life rather than to treat the cancer itself — for example, to relieve pain caused by a tumor that’s pressing on a nerve or bone or to remove a tumor that’s obstructing your intestine.

How is cancer surgery traditionally performed ?

Traditionally, the primary purpose of cancer surgery is to cure your cancer by physically removing all of it from your body. The surgeon usually does this by cutting into your body and removing the cancer along with some surrounding tissue to ensure that all of the cancer is removed. Your surgeon may also remove some lymph nodes in the area to determine if the cancer has spread. This helps your doctor assess the chance of your being cured, as well as the need for any further treatment.

What other techniques are used in cancer surgery ?

Many other types of surgical methods for treating cancer and precancerous conditions exist, and investigators are always researching new methods…

Anal Cancer

Anal cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the anus. The anus is the end of the large intestine, below the rectum, through which stool (solid waste) leaves the body. The anus is formed partly from the outer, skin layers of the body and partly from the intestine. Two ring-like muscles, called sphincter muscles, open and close the anal opening to let stool pass out of the body. The anal canal, the part of the anus between the rectum and the anal opening, is about 1½ inches long.

Anatomy of the lower digestive system, showing the colon and other organs.

The skin around the outside of the anus is called the perianal area. Tumors in this area are skin tumors, not analcancer.

Being infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV) can affect the risk of developing anal cancer.

Types of anal cancer

Squamous cell cancer

About 9 out of 10 (90%) anal cancers are squamous cell cancers, sometimes called epidermoid cancers.

There are 3 types of squamous cell anal cancer

* Large cell keratinising

* Large cell non keratinising (also called transitional)

* Basaloid

Non keratinising and basaloid cancers are sometimes grouped together as 'cloacogenic’ anal cancer. A keratinising cancer has keratin (the protein that forms your hair and nails) in the cancer cells. This type of anal cancer starts in the transitional zone of the anal canal, where the squamous cells meet the glandular cells. All the squamous cell types of anal cancer are treated in the same way.

Non epidermoid cancer

The other 1 out of 10 anal cancers (10%) are adenocarcinoma, small cell cancers, ‘ undifferentiated’ cancers (known as basaloid cancers) and melanomas. This group is known as non-epidermoid cancers. They behave differently to squamous cell anal cancers, so the treatment is different.

Cancers that start at the anal margin, usually look more like normal cells (they are ‘ well differentiated’). Anal margin tumours are more common in men than women. Cancers that start higher up in the anal canal are more common in women.

This is a rare type of anal cancer that affects the glandular cells that produce mucus in the anal canal. Only 5% of anal cancers are this type. This type of anal cancer is treated in the same way as rectal cancer. Basal cell carcinoma

This is a type of skin cancer and it develops in the area around the anus. You can find information about treatment of basal cell cancers in the skin cancer section of CancerHelp UK.

This is another type of skin cancer. These cancers develop from the cells that produce melanin, the pigment or colour for the skin. Treatment is the same as for other melanomas.

Diagnosis of Anal Cancer

Possible signs of anal cancer include bleeding from the anus or rectum or a lump near the anus.

These and other symptoms may be caused by anal cancer. Other conditions may cause the same symptoms. A doctor should be consulted if any of the following problems occur: -

* Bleeding from the anus or rectum.

* Pain or pressure in the area around the anus.

* Itching or discharge from the anus.

* A lump near the anus.

* A change in bowel habits.

Tests that examine the rectum and anus are used to detect (find) and diagnose anal cancer.

The following tests and procedures may be used: -

* Physical exam and history: – An exam of the body to check general signs of health, including checking for signs of disease, such as lumps or anything else that seems unusual. A history of the patient’s health habits and past illnesses and treatments will also be taken.

* Digital rectal examination (DRE): – An exam of the anus and rectum. The doctor or nurse inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the lower part of the rectum to feel for lumps or anything else that seems unusual.

* Anoscopy: – An exam of the anus and lower rectum using a short, lighted tube called an anoscope.

* Proctoscopy: – An exam of the rectum using a short, lighted tube called a proctoscope.

* Endo-anal or endorectal ultrasound: – A procedure in which an ultrasound transducer (probe) is inserted into the anus or rectum and used to bounce high-energy sound waves (ultrasound) off internal tissues or organs and make echoes. The echoes form a picture of body tissues called a sonogram.

* Biopsy: – The removal of cells or tissues so they can be viewed under a microscope by a pathologist to check for signs of cancer. If an abnormal area is seen during the anoscopy, a biopsy may be done at that time.

Primary among these is that pre-menopausal women aren’t at a significant risk of developing this type of cancer. However, the American Cancer Society revealed that this is the leading cause of death by cancer for women between the ages of 20 to 59 in the United States.Colon Cancer Screening Guidelines Hence age is less of an indicator of risk for cancer of the breast than first thought to be. Increasing awareness of among all strata of women is the role of breast cancer bracelets.

Why breast cancer bracelets?

Cancer of the breast is an insidious disease affecting the lives of millions of American women today. Breast cancer bracelets help increase the awareness of the symptoms, causes and treatment in an effort to stem the disease before it gets to a critical stage. The legendary cyclist Lance Armstrong, a cancer survivor himself, once wore a yellow bracelet with the words ‘Live Strong’ at the Tour de France, to advocate the need for cancer survivors to overcome the disease and move on in life with faith and courage.

His example paved the way for pink bracelets to be worn at fund-raising events such as cancer runs and walks. Inspiring words such as ‘Hope’ or ‘Faith’ and ‘Courage’ are very often etched on the bracelet. Pink is the color of cancer of the breast awareness in the same way as red is stands for awareness of HIV and AIDS.

The corresponding ribbon is also pink in color. This beautiful shade of color was chosen for its liveliness and positive vibe to cancer sufferers. Hope is an essential element in the treatment of this cancer. With hope, cancer sufferers can look forward to a day when they will be cancer free. The absence of hope defeats even the best medical properties.

Pink is a lovely color often associated with women and by purchasing breast cancer bracelets, a portion of the money will be donated to research into the disease. The Cancer Research Foundation thrives on money generated through such generous contributions and has paved the way for new cures and treatment to help cancer sufferers manage and fight the disease.

These bracelets are now in the forefront of the battle against cancer. It’s a perennial message of hope and courage to cancer victims. You can do your part to raise awareness by promoting the use of attractive breast cancer bracelets.

Therefore a breast cancer walk is an ideal way to promote awareness of this insidious disease that affects the lives of numerous women in the United States today.

Risk Factors

A breast cancer walk increases awareness of the risk factors of cancer of the breast. Among these are: a family history of this type of cancer, early onset of menarche or late menopause as well as a personal history of abnormalities of the breast or a breast disease which was diagnosed as benign. Even a high fat diet can contribute to its development. Genetics have long been associated as a possible contributing factor to the disease.

After lung cancer, cancer of the breast is the second most common cause of cancer among women. Therefore it’s beneficial for women to be aware of the causes of this disease, the symptoms and how it can be treated. Management is an important part of cancer awareness.

Breast Cancer Walk

The breast cancer walk is considered one of the most important awareness programs for this cancer. This 3 day walk is a benefit program that aims to raise funds. This is an important walk that benefits victims of cancer of the breast. Both men and women participate in this 3 day walk that covers 60 miles and involves millions of Americans all over the country. It’s an ideal opportunity for participants to further understand this dangerous disease and help spread the word among their family, friends and associates.

By being a participant in this walk, you can meet plenty of like minded people from all walks of life. You can share your experience and learn how others have coped with the disease. There are countless people along the route who offer food and drinks to all the participants and safety nets make the experience fulfilling and safe for everyone involved. Medical volunteers are on standby to ensure that that anyone who needs medical attention during the walk will get it promptly.

Breast cancer walk is a great idea to spread the awareness of cancer of the breast. It’s also lots of fun involving physical activity that everyone can join in. You’ll be doing your bit for a good cause.

Cancer is often misdiagnosed because we all want to believe that we are invincible and it could not happen to us. Well it can. Cancer has no favorites. Cancer, in its early stages has few if any symptoms because it works from the inside out. Some symptoms can be attributed to numerous other causes or simply ignored because, “it’s just a little sore throat.” Misdiagnosis can also come from inadequate testing, misinterpretation or something is overlooked.

It was the phone call that we did not want to get. The doctor was just rather blunt about it. It is cancer but I don’t know where the mother tumor is. Since the swelling was in my lymph node in my neck, he said that the mother tumor was either in the lungs or somewhere between there and the brain. That kind of puts you in a tail spin.

Explore all the research you can for your particular type of treatment that is available. Inquire to others. Do not leave it all up to your doctor. When I found out about a particular treatment, I asked my doctor and he mentioned that he had heard of it but not that familiar with it. It was ultimately the treatment I chose.

One half of these patients were given aloe vera juice thrice a day in conjunction with their chemotherapy regimen. The other half had only their standard chemotherapy. Results revealed that patients undergoing standard treatment with aloe supplementation manifested a better quality of life, higher survival rates (more than 3 years) and lesser chemotherapy side effects.

One of the best ways to maintain healthy teeth and prevent decay is through diet. Eating badly helps damage your teeth and eating well helps fight tooth decay. The fewer cavities you have and the healthier lifestyle you live, the greater the chance the genes in your cells will not be damaged. Healthy genes equal healthy cells and that equates to a cancer-free body.

To beat cancer effectively you need all of the help you can get. Much of that help is found in a cancer diet rich in foods that kill cancer cells, and proper drinking water to adequately hydrate your body. A cancer diet that is rich in cancer fighting compounds and nutrients, such as beta carotene, polyphenols, anti-oxidants and other such compounds, is crucial.

Now, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I sure as heck wouldn’t want my health to worsen from treatment if the whole point of receiving it is so that I would be healthier. Had the actor known about Hyperthermia, and chose this noninvasive treatment instead, he would’ve still had his voice, maintained his appetite, and even gain more strength.

Oropharyngeal and mouth cancer kill someone in the UK every five hours according to some very disturbing statistics. The fact that most of these deaths could have been prevented is tragic. More men die from mouth cancer than women. Cancer Research UK reports that while oral cancer mortality rates among men aged 75+ have fallen by more than sixty percent during the last 30 years, mouth cancer mortality rates for men aged 45-64 have increased by an alarming sixty nine percent during the same period.

herbal cancer treatments:

1. Also try to put a limit on your cola intake. Sodas usually counteract the body’s anti-oxidants and increase the speed for the degeneration of cells, which can lead to a less resistance for cancer growth.

2. You should also avoid smoking. Smoking is the one of the main causes of lung, throat and tongue cancer. Also be sure to also avoid secondary smoke.

3. Lower amount of sweets you eat. Eating too many sweet foods can increase the chance of developing tumors and lower the body’s defense against the growth of cancer.

Cancer is one of the most feared negative afflictions for the body, with over 100 different forms and with medical studies proving that at least one in three people will be affected by cancer at some stage in their life. This is why billions of dollars have been devoted to finding a cure, but what people are forgetting is that there is something that works better than expensive medicine. Natural cancer cures!

Mouth cancer in cats is an extremely serious condition, and if it not detected early, it is almost always fatal. It is estimated that about one third of all cats will die from some form of cancer, and watching for and understanding the early symptoms can make the difference between life and death for your cat.

Oral cancers are closely related to the habits of smoking and drinking alcohol. These cancers can be devastating and often go undiagnosed. If you are or have been a smoker, check your oral cavity for changes. Changes you do find should be seen by a health professional. The best thing you can do to reduce your risk of developing oral cancers is to quit smoking. Join a quit smoking program and get the support and assistance you need to become smoke free for good.

The symptoms for oral cancer are very general which might sometimes turn out to be some other disease but nevertheless it is better to go to a dentist or a general physician or ENT specialist to rule out any possibility. The few visible symptoms are: white or red patch on the lips, inside of the mouth or around mouth which has been there for long , loose teeth, bleeding from mouth.
