Enter alternative therapies such as homeopathy instead of conventional medicines for children can be fatal side effects in rare cases, says a new analysis.

Australian researchers in Australia suspected Monitoring Report 2001-2003 pediatricians side effects of the search for alternative therapies such as herbal treatments, natural health vitamins or pills. They have 39 reports of adverse events, including four deaths.

The study, published online Thursday in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, a specialist publication of the British Medical Journal.

Unlike conventional medicines whose side effects are marked by the national surveillance systems, no systems of this type of alternative treatment methods.

In the study, researchers found that children from newborn to 16 years were affected by alternative medicine, and that nearly 65 percent of cases fatal side effects were classified as serious or life-threatening. In 44 percent of the cases believe that their patients are pediatricians damaged due to lack of conventional medicines.

“We’ve known for some time that alternative medicine could endanger patients,” says Edzard Ernst, professor of complementary medicine at Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, England. He was not the study.

“Perhaps the greatest damage occurs when effective treatment is not replaced by alternative therapies are effective,” he said. “In front of this situation, even a harmful drug, in essence, homeopathic remedies can be life threatening,” said Ernst.

Elisa’s Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne Ocean and his colleagues wrote that all four deaths were caused by the decision alternative therapies instead of conventional drugs.
