It seems to be becoming a habit but for the third time in the span of three weeks, another air controller has reportedly slept on the job over at Reno. And the timing couldn't have come at a worse time considering there was an emergency of sorts when a medical plane was bringing in a sick passenger early Wednesday. Thankfully, the plane was able to land safely and no additional casualties ensued. You can just imagine the dangers of landing a plane without tower assistance, a catastrophe that could certainly be unforgiveable. To somehow remedy this problem, the FAA has finally mandated that the midnight shift be manned by a minimum of two people at every tower that operates overnight. For the time-being, official word on why the personnel assigned fell asleep this time is being investigated. According to some researchers, there are strategies that nurses undergo. This includes sleeping in late on mornings before the first night shift and maintaining a night schedule on their day offs. Depending on how you look at it, these could be great strategies. However, for health and production sake, researchers encourage nurses to avoid the no-sleep strategy and call on hospitals to re-evaluate the scheduling of nurses. Scheduling is a very touchy issue and many nurses, particularly the younger ones, like the current system because it allows them to string together a number of days off without taking vacation. Health issues that include cardiovascular and some gastrointestinal issues are linked to sleep problems that nurses may be prone to, something that could hinder performance and their effectiveness if not addressed properly.
