Patients, the drugs to compensate for diabetes are much less likely to have lung cancer to spread – that is, if it is more lethal – the researchers told a meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Metformin, a generic is available and cheaper, has powerful new drugs called thiazolidinediones, TZDs or glitazones, the researchers said.

The team studied the medical records of 157 lung cancer survivors with diabetes.

Those who had drug or metformin or TZD had significantly less advanced lung cancer that has spread – 20 percent taking the drug has spread their cancer, compared to 42 percent of them.

“The trend we have seen starting TZDs protection of metformin,” said Mazzone.

TZD in GlaxoSmithKline Avandia, rosiglitazone, as known, and the competing drug Actos, or pioglitazone, from Takeda Pharmaceutical Ltd.

Mazzone said it could one day metformin prevent lung cancer in smokers.
